Hunt’s Point Former Consolidated Edison Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP)

The Site is located in the northeast portion of the Hunts Point Cooperative Market, in Bronx, New York. Previously, the Site was used as a manufactured gas plant that operated from 1926 until the early 1960s and was demolished in 1968. This Site was considered one of the most contaminated projects in the United States.

Specific project work included the completion of environmental remediation approved by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC). The remediation consisted of In-situ Stabilization (ISS) of manufactured gas plant waste (including coal tar and Prussian blue purifier bed waste material) and the control and treatment of groundwater. LRT installed a custom water treatment system rated for up to 500 gallons per minute (gpm) to help tackle this major remediation project. The primary contaminants of concern in the waste stream included total suspended solids (TSS), manufactured gas plant related compounds (MGPs), low pH and hydrogen sulfide (H2S).
